Lead Paint Classes

EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) Rule requires that any firm or person performing renovation, repair or painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, childcare facilities and pre-schools built before 1978 be certified by EPA (or an EPA-authorized state), use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers and follow lead-safe work practices. The EPA federal RRP law is one of five laws of its kind. Depending on your jurisdiction, you could also encounter these:
  • State Law – your state may have its own lead law, which you need to adhere to IN ADDITION to the EPA’s RRP law. (See MA, RI, NY references below)
  • OSHA 1926.62 (Lead in Construction) applies whenever you have employees or your business is incorporated and you work for the corporation
  • HUD’s lead law applies to renovations in HUD dwellings or projects funded by a HUD agency
  • Any local town ordinances that apply to lead.

The RRP law is not the same in every state. MA and RI are “authorized states,” meaning they have added additional elements to the federal RRP law to create their own state law.
