If you’re a licensed construction supervisor in Massachusetts, keeping your Construction Supervisor License (CSL) up to date is crucial for staying compliant and continuing to pull permits for projects. But when renewal time comes around, many contractors find themselves scrambling to understand the continuing education requirements, renewal process, and deadlines.
At LeadSMART Training, we make it easy for construction professionals to renew their CSL quickly and efficiently. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about CSL renewal in Massachusetts, so you can stay on track without unnecessary stress.
When Do You Need to Renew Your MA CSL?
The Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) requires all CSL holders to renew their license every two years. The expiration date is printed on your CSL card, and you should receive a renewal notice from the state 60 days before your license expires.
However, even if you don’t receive a notice, it’s your responsibility to renew on time to avoid working with an expired license.
Massachusetts CSL Continuing Education Requirements
To renew your CSL, you must complete a state-approved Continuing Education (CE) program before submitting your renewal. The number of hours required depends on the type of CSL you hold:
Unrestricted CSL: 12 hours of continuing education
Restricted (One- & Two-Family Dwellings) CSL: 10 hours of continuing education
Specialty CSL (Roofing, Masonry, Windows/Siding, etc.): 6 hours of continuing education
Required Topics for Continuing Education
The state mandates that a portion of your CE hours cover these core subjects:
✔️ Code Updates (Building Code, Energy Code, etc.)
✔️ Construction Safety (OSHA guidelines, job site safety)
✔️ Business Practices & Workers’ Compensation
✔️ Lead-Safe Practices (for lead paint awareness and handling)
✔️ Energy Efficiency (compliance with state energy codes)
The remaining CE hours can be elective courses that enhance your skills in construction management, estimating, or other industry topics.
Methods to Obtain CEU’s
- Attend an in person, two day 12 CEU approved course found here: Construction Supervisor License MA Class Schedule
- Attend a RECORDED ONLINE 6 CEU approved course AND an in person course to obtain the balance of CEU’S your license category requires such as found here: Construction Supervisor License MA Hybrid Class Schedule
- Attend various professional presentations that offer MA BBRS APPROVED CEU’s – you must ensure you obtain the proper category of CEU’s when you compile these credits.

How to Renew Your Massachusetts CSL
Once you’ve completed your CE credits, follow these simple steps to renew your CSL:
1. Submit Your Renewal Application
You can renew your CSL either online or by mail through the Massachusetts Division of Occupational Licensure (DOL). (NOTE: You must allow 5 weeks for license application to be processed)
Online: Use the ePLACE Portal to complete your renewal electronically. This is the fastest option.
By Mail: Fill out the renewal application you received and send it to the address provided.
In Person: Submit your application package to MA BBRS Office (NOTE: you will not leave with a license, only a receipt that you submitted your application)
2. Pay the Renewal Fee
The current renewal fees are:
– $100 for Unrestricted and Restricted CSL
– $100 for Specialty CSL
If you submit your renewal after your license has expired, you may be subject to additional late fees as well as reactivation requirements including re-testing.
3. Receive Your New CSL License
Once your renewal is processed, you’ll receive a new CSL license in the form of a pdf via email for another two years. BBRS no longer issues a laminated card. Keep a copy for your records and ensure your information is updated with the state.
What Happens If Your CSL Expires?
If you fail to renew your CSL before the expiration date, you cannot legally supervise construction projects or pull permits in Massachusetts.
If your license is expired for more than two years, you may be required to retake the CSL exam to reinstate it. To avoid this, it’s best to renew on time and keep track of your CEU hours.
