What Is the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program?
This course is part of Massachusetts’ ongoing commitment to reducing childhood lead exposure and educating those responsible for maintaining safe housing.
Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of:
-
The Massachusetts Lead Law
-
The legal responsibilities of property owners and agents
-
Safe work practices for moderate-risk deleading
-
How to properly complete the written exam required for authorization
This program is administered through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) and is only intended for property owners or their agents.
Who Should Take This Course?
This class is ideal for:
-
Residential property owners in Massachusetts
-
Landlords and rental property managers
-
Real estate agents or brokers managing properties on behalf of owners
-
Anyone who wants to perform moderate-risk deleading work legally and safely on their own properties
⚠️ Important Note for Contractors:
This class does not authorize contractors to perform deleading work professionally for others.
Contractors must complete the 8-hour LSR-S Initial Course followed by the 4-hour Moderate-Risk Deleading Option to become certified.
What Happens After the Course?
At the end of the training, each participant will receive a written exam, administered and mailed by the CLPPP. You’ll complete the test at home and return it by mail. If you pass, CLPPP will send you an authorization package so you can begin performing moderate-risk deleading tasks legally on your properties.
Why This Matters
Lead poisoning is a serious health risk for children, and Massachusetts has some of the strictest lead laws in the country. By becoming authorized to perform moderate-risk deleading, property owners can:
-
Protect the health and safety of children and families
-
Stay compliant with state regulations
-
Save money by handling some deleading tasks themselves
