  • Crystalline silica is a common mineral found in the earth's crust. Materials like sand, stone, concrete, and mortar contain crystalline silica. Respirable crystalline silica – very small particles at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand you might find on beaches and playgrounds – is created when cutting, sawing, grinding, drilling, and crushing stone, rock, concrete, brick, block, and mortar. Activities such as abrasive blasting with sand; sawing brick or concrete; sanding or drilling into concrete walls; grinding mortar; manufacturing brick, concrete blocks, stone countertops, or ceramic products; and cutting or crushing stone result in worker exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. Workers who inhale these very small crystalline silica particles are at increased risk of developing serious silica-related diseases, including:
    • Silicosis, an incurable lung disease that can lead to disability and death;
    • Lung cancer;
    • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); and
    • Kidney disease.
    To protect workers exposed to respirable crystalline silica, OSHA requires specific safety training. This class is 1 hour and 58 minutes long and is intended to meet OSHA’s 1926.1153 training requirements. Don’t worry, this training isn’t boring. These trainers are contractors too and always keep things interesting…and what you learn could save your life! How do I access training?     La sílice cristalina es un mineral común que se encuentra en la corteza terrestre. Materiales como arena, piedra, hormigón y mortero contienen sílice cristalina. La sílice cristalina respirable (partículas muy pequeñas al menos 100 veces más pequeñas que la arena ordinaria que puede encontrar en las playas y los parques infantiles) se crea al cortar, aserrar, moler, taladrar y triturar piedra, roca, hormigón, ladrillo, bloque y mortero. Actividades como chorreado abrasivo con arena; aserrar ladrillos u hormigón; lijar o taladrar paredes de hormigón; mortero de molienda; fabricación de ladrillos, bloques de hormigón, encimeras de piedra o productos cerámicos; y cortar o triturar piedras provocan la exposición de los trabajadores al polvo de sílice cristalina respirable.   • This course is intended to meet OSHA’s 1910.134 training requirements for anyone who is required to wear a tight fitting respirator. The regulation states that prior to using a respirator, a medical evaluation, training and fit testing (if a tight fitting respirator is to be used) must be performed. The regulation also states the training and fit testing must be performed annually as well as under certain circumstances. This class is presented by LeadSMART’s founder, Peter Lawton, CSHO. The class length is approximately 1.75 hours and will meet the training requirements set out by OSHA’s 1910.134(k).
